Discrimination

For my Blog Assignment I chose to use ‘Discrimination’ for my global issue. Discrimination is a global issue which has been around for hundreds of years.

Last Riot 2 Tondo – 22

AES+F Group

2005-2006

Digital collage, digital print on canvas

This artwork displays the hatred/abuse between different races. This picture almost shows a World War, because of racism. As you can see there are pink Chinese dragons in power plants, the power plants could be from Russia only because it’s one of the most heaviest polluted countries. The planes could represent U.S.A because they were the ‘first country to produce a flying machine’ or so it has been told. The main reason this artwork shows racism is because of the different coloured people wanted to bash each other up.

Photographs

This collage of photographs was taken by a video called ‘Stereomongrel’. This artwork focuses on indetity, and discrimination. Every race has their own beliefs and culture, this for some can lead to horrible things such as cults killing people.

Albino Family

Colourism is a form of discrimination in which human beings are being physically, mentally and spiritually abused because of the col0ur of their skin. I chose this picture of albinoes because of the attacks in Tanzania which had been going on for two years, the attacks resulted in over 50 albino murders. Recently 3 men were found guilty for mudering a 14 year old boy and severing his legs, the men were sentenced to death. The reason for the boy’s death was  a religious belief that the ground up bones of albinoes would bring good luck to those who possessed them.

A Video On How To Make Authentic Ikebana October 28, 2009

Although this is a low quality video, it gives a basic idea of how to make ikebana. After watching this video I found myself quite inspired, I was surprised at the ways the man connected the branches together to make it look like it was moving in a freeform way. This reminded me of lighting and how we had to use organic ways of connecting parts of the light together.

I also like the beautiful music that comes with this video, it’s so peaceful that I feel calm and happy when I watch this video, I think this is partly why I feel so inspired.

IMG_0593Mechanical Drawing

This is one of my most favourite pieces of artworks I have made. The background is a floral wallpaper pattern containing mainly thick vines that attach to eachother throughout the artwork. There are little forms of flowers and big monoprint looking flowers too. In the middle of the artwork there is a horse which I drew last semester for Visual Arts, inside the horse is a technical drawing of some kind of machine, it has exploded views of where bolts are supposed to fit into the machine and many small figures of numbers. I like the way i produced this artwork because it almost contradicts nature with man-made equipment, as well as abuse towards animals. In a way this relates to my theme ‘ikebana’ because ikebana uses man-made and organic matter to be brought together in harmony through flower arrangement.

Peacock and Dragon

1878

woven woollen fabric designed by William Morris

William Morris, born 24 March 1834 to 3rd October 1896 was an English architect, furniture and textile designer, artist and writer. His interest for the medievel times is shown through this self-designed fabrics. The name of the fabric ‘Peacock and Dragon’ is an obvious giveaway for what the design is. The yellow material in the fabric displays the images of the dragon and the patterns related to it, while the brown material displays the images of the peacock and the patterns also related to it. This relates to my artwork because of the patterns displayed throughout the fabric, and how the fabric shows extremely detailed places while some places are quite simple.

picture-2Diana Cooper

Emerger

2005-2006

paper, felt, vinyl,  acrylic, ink foamcore and map pins.

This is a sketch coming to life. I like the way this has been presented, although it’s stuck to the wall and floor, it comes out at you as a 3 dimensional fragmented grid. The red Cooper used stands out well from the wall while the grey/black frame distinguishes the body of the pieces. I think it relates to my work because if the background of the floral wallpaper pattern was coloured, this would bring out the horse making it look like it’s coming out of the picture, although this would only be an illusion.

finalInformation Graphics

I liked this workshop the least because I’m not hugely interested on making art using a computer graphic software. This was originally a picture of a Calla Lily but I drew over the background and put in some nice patterns and colour, then erased parts of the images to see what kinda of effect it would show. After deleting the background this is what it ended up looking like. I think it looks ok, but is definitely not one of my best works.

Flowers

Screenprint on white paper

This is one of a series of artworks Andy Warhol has made, the series all have different coloured flowers and grass. This artwork has more of a detailed background with simple coloured flowers whereas mine is the opposite. The background is plain white. The detail goes into the images i have created.

Flowers

Oil on canvas

I like this painting because it displays a branch is a vase. This makes the image quite bland but the way it has been painted brings out the complexity of the artwork. My artwork shows simple images with detailed fillings which makes it look more appealing.

IMG_0584Materiality

I enjoyed this workshop the most, because I was able to use clay as my material. This tile is seperated into sections each showing different textures and patterns, which was the main idea. I chose to leave this tile unpainted because it shows the texture of the clay and the different shades it produced when being fired up. I took this picture of the tile on top of my duvet cover because the bubbles and colours of the cover brought out the colour and textures of the tile, and I think it looks nicely presented.

Brass relief

I like this artwork because it looks similar to mine, only it’s confined to one jagged shape. This brass piece is divded into sections using the same texture whereas mine is divded into different textures and shapes. Both the artworks consist of one colour showing different shades.

Herzog and de Meuron

Chandelier of Rock Crystals

2001

I included this artwork in y blog because it’s a different way of displaying a chandelier. I like how the wire holds the pieces of rocks in a line formation. The orange light reflects off the stones in a neat way, this gives the chandelier more appeal.

This semester i have chosen “ikebana” as my subject matter. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, it focuses on lines and shapes formed from branches, leaves and flowers.ky001 ishida

The Pursuer

Ink and an inkjet print on photographic quality cotton paper

This artwork is based on human emotions, mainly depressed moods. The boy covering his hands feels despair while the ‘persuer’ is reaching out to him. I chose this artwork because the ‘persuer’ reflects abuse, this relates to my theme of slavery because the slaves were abused if they weren’t doing what was told. This gave the slaves a feel of despair because they thought there was no hope to set them free. This artwork debates the concept of wether spirits are felt among us in the real world.

Hope in the Prison of Despair

40.64cm X 45.72cm

Oil paint on canvas

1887

www.jimandellen.org

This artwork shows a young person holding a lamp entering a cell where a young girl is crying with her hands over face displaying a sense of despair and grief. The light the person is holding represents hope, and the halo surrounding the persons face shows the religious side behind the artwork. I believe the name of this artwork, ‘Hope in the Prison of Despair’ implifies that the girl who is crying is confined in her own prison of despair.

Despair

www.dart.fine-art.com

This artwork is an obvious hint that it’s subjet matter is loss of hope. The figures at the top are being sucked into a pool of despair while the figures down the bottom are enclosed in a fire. The jaws in the middle are sign of the figures being caged in with no way of escaping. This related to slavery because the figures are being tormented as were slaves.

Marble

www.artparks.co.uk

This sculpture shows a a lady crying, she is crying from the loss of her unborn baby. She is in despair and lost hope for it. Women who were slaves and pregnant were forced to do as much work as women who weren’t, it would’ve consequented with the loss of an unborn child from doing to much work such as lifting and ploughing. I feel it would’ve been a hard time for them.

Pablo Picasso

The Weeping Woman

60cm X 49cm

Oil on canvas

1937

www.inminds.co.uk

This painting shows how grief can be communicated by a face. It gives the viewer a sight of pain and agony which i find very interesting as the painting is out of proportion. The grey surrounding the woman’s mouth and hand represent pessimism, so she is waiting for something bad to happen. She is not in the emotion of despair, yet. The yellow background shows a sign of happiness, so it’s not the end of her life as she thinks.

Michal Macku

Untitled

30cm X 35cm

Carbon Print

www.michal-macku.eu

This photograph shows a man covering his face with hands and a long rip down his body. The dark shades represent death, there is no hope only despair. The white rip displays the man surrendering his life. I like this artwork because it uses sutble colours yet it explains so much about the artwork. This relates to slavery because the slaves were forced to give their lives up to their masters.

Edvard Munch

Despair

92cm X 72.5cm

Oil on canvas

1893-1894

www.edvard-munch.com

This artwork shows a man wandering to escape from what he fears. The orange represents the full energy of the wanderer. It gives us a idea that he is anxious. The two men chatting closely behind him show that he is alone.
